sunday night babysitting

I had the pleasure of babysitting Chiron, 6 months old, while his parents, Lincoln & Alicia, went out on a date. We danced around the living room to Neko Case and Grizzly Bear. We went outside and looked at the plants and smelled the bluebells. We watched the clouds turn pink. We bounced on a big yoga ball and made funny faces in the mirror. I read my book to him. We had a great time together.

When the folks got back we played cards and drank beers. A lovely Sunday evening

it isn't robb/crockett but I'll take what I can get

Jimmy played a show way the hell out in Gresham, at a bar he used to bartend at. Lincoln joined him. Most of the show was with the Jimmy Robb Band, a whole mob of musicians (bass, saxophone, etc etc) on stage but this was a more mellow moment with just Jimmy and Lincoln. My friends are infinitely talented.

Dave shows off his pipes. Help us, we're in Gresham on a Saturday night. Only our friends playing music could inspire such journeys.

The Cedarville Inn has a zillion tvs which were showing a wide variety of crappy programming. It's very distracting to try and watch live music when there's Ultimate Fighting on a mammoth tv followed by countless ads for Girls Gone Wild DVDs. The stars over the boobs are especially charming.

the long shadows fill the gully

this was the view from where we practiced self-arrest, the means of stopping yourself if you are falling on the mountain and self-belay has failed. It was intimidating to slide down the mountain on your back and belly, head pointing downhill (the instructor had to hold my feet so I wouldn't start sliding before I was lying down all the way) but I was able to stop myself in all the different positions. The soft snow made it harder to really slide out of control too. Dig the pick of your ice axe into the snow and spin your legs around and flip onto your belly. A critical skill to have in mountaineering, hopefully one I'll never have to actually use.

11 hours on the mountain makes me sunburned and happy

Hello everyone!

My weekend started early. I had Friday off work. Spring term I’ve been taking a mountaineering class and Friday was our field day on the mountain. We met at Timberline Lodge at 8 AM. Some students (those that had taken winter camping) were already up on the mountain with the instructors for a weekend camping trip. It was a beautiful sunny day on the mountain. We couldn’t have been luckier with the weather. We hiked over to the base camp area then to a gully where we would be doing the bulk of our work that day. We spent a while working on footwork, how to properly walk down a steep snowy slope and up one. We learned how to use ice axes and how to walk in crampons. Self-arrest was one of the most interesting (and intimidating skills). If you begin falling on the mountain first you try to self-belay by jamming your ice axe down into the snow to stop yourself. If that doesn’t stop you must self-arrest (or else you’ll just keep falling and falling). This is the technique of using your ice axe to stop yourself on a fall on a steep slope. We had to practice stopping ourselves from the 4 different positions (because you’ll never know which way you’ll fall): feet first on your back, feet first on your belly, head first on your back and head first on your belly. Head first on your back was the most intimidating as the instructor had to hold your feet so you wouldn’t begin sliding before you lying down all the way. I was able to stop myself successfully (I’m not still up on the mountain falling!). It felt great to be able to do it but hopefully it’s a skill I’ll never have to actually use.

After the self-arrest session we took a break for lunch then it was back to the steep slopes where we learned about anchor building. We then roped up and practiced some roped team traveling using running belays. It was around this time that I started getting cold for the first time. We weren’t moving as much as earlier in the day and the sun had dropped below the trees so my toes started getting cold. Just as we were getting ready to head out the clouds were really thickening up and the wind started blowing hard. I was not envious of the students that were staying on the mountain to camp on the snow. I left Timberline after 11 hours on the mountain, exhausted but very happy for the time spent and all that I learned.

Saturday morning I had to work for about 4 hours as the College was having another FAFSA day to help students with their applications. I was sore and kinda sunburned from the mountain (despite putting on sunscreen 5 times!). After work I returned my crampons that I had rented and stopped at Foti’s Greek Deli for a gyro and some hummus. Later that night I had dinner at Elaine & Gina’s house and then Dave & Elaine & I drove out to Gresham to see our friends, Jimmy and Lincoln, play some live music. I really dislike the venue which is filled with tvs. The music was great though and it was fun to see some of the Trout Lakers that had come down for the show.

Sunday during the day I just read and watched movies. In the evening I went over to Lincoln & Alicia’s house in Sellwood. They were going on a date while I babysat their 6 month old son Chiron. We listened to music and danced in the living room. We investigated plants in the garden then watched the clouds turned pink. We bounced a big yoga ball and made funny faces in the mirror. I read my book to him. It was really fun and he was a great baby. The last ten minutes he started crying and there was nothing I could do to soothe him. Just then Mom and Dad returned and all was right with the world. I hung out and we played a game of Phase 10, chatting and drinking beers while listening to Sharon Jones tear up the hi-fi.

So that was my weekend (two weekends ago). Hey! I’m almost caught up!

Fresh oysters! I bought them at the Portland Farmer's Market (fresh from Netarts Bay on the Oregon coast). Elaine, Gina & I all shucked oysters for the first time (it was easier than we thought) and then ate up all the delicious oysters raw with a bunch of fresh lemon, some wasabi cocktail sauce and a yummy Pinot Noir.

Later we ate a huge fresh papaya, sliced and soaked in fresh lime juice and cayenne. mmmmmmm

She's lucky if she tops 110 lbs when she's not pregnant so she's a tiny girl with a big baby. It's a boy! Name to be determined...

Brian had a bbq at his house so Shannon could meet more of his friends. I met her a long time ago. They're a great match.

the farmers come downtown and I go east

Hello everyone!

I’m way way behind on this so I’ll have to do some summarizing. Friday night I went to bbq at Brian’s house. His girlfriend Shannon was in town from Washington DC so it was a fun get together. Brian’s roommate, Christopher made ribs which were fantastically good.

Saturday morning I met up with my friend Stephanie who is very far along in her pregnancy (her second). We went to the Farmer’s Market where we meandered and sampled jellies (I bought the rhubarb jam) and bought pigs in a blanket for lunch (a sausage wrapped in a hazelnut pancake). Stephanie and I worked together at Lewis & Clark College and randomly get together. She’s an exceptional person and it was great to see her so so so pregnant. I felt her baby (another little) boy hiccupping inside her, a first for me! My best purchase was a dozen fresh oysters. The seafood stand had oysters from Netarts Bay on the Oregon coast, packed in ice. Later that evening I brought them over to Elaine & Gina’s house where we watched a little video online about how to shuck an oyster than cracked those babies open. They were fantastically good!

Sunday I went on a hike far east in the Columbia River Gorge. It was about an hour from Portland just past the town of Hood River. This is on the east side of the Cascades so it is regularly sunnier and warmer there than in Portland. I timed my hike right because the wildflowers were going crazy. In a few months that area will all be baked brown but now it is gorgeous! First I hiked up to McCall Point at steep climb but the view of Mt Adams across the river got better as I went up and up. Next I hiked a lower, level area right along the cliffs next to the Columbia River. I took tons of photos and enjoyed the sunshine on my face.

I hope all is well and sorry for falling so far behind. Time to catch up!

At 2,000 feet up Trout Lake is definitely slower to warm up than Portland at sea level. Their trees are still bare or just beginning to leaf out while in Portland they're almost all green. I'm going to climb this mountain
I'm taking a mountaineering class to learn some technical skills (though you can climb Mt Adams later in the summer without them I'd still like to learn and climb Mt Hood some day soon). I opted out of the second part of the class where we attempt to summit Mt Adams. Instead I asked my friend Jason, who lives in Trout Lake and works for the Forest Service, if he would take me to the top of Mt Adams this summer. He's offered in the past so I wasn't surprised when he agreed, just happy. I literally jumped up and down and grinned.

pig roast on the mountain!

Hello everyone

I had a fantastic weekend in Trout Lake. I left straight from work and drove up the Gorge. It was hot, the warmest day of the year so far in Portland at 80. I actually had to turn on the air conditioning in my car! It was definitely not that warm in Trout Lake (since the town is 2000 feet higher than Portland) but it was still very mild and sunny. Dave arrived at Wampler’s house just minutes after me. I unloaded my stuff and Dave took off to catch the last few rounds of frisbee golf with the gang while I drove up to the lake for some views of Mt Adams. The weather wasn’t supposed to be so great the rest of the weekend so I wanted to make sure I got some photos of the mountain before it was hiding in the clouds. The view at Trout Lake (the lake itself) is phenomenal with Mt Adams looming directly across the lake and reflected in the slowly moving water. I took lots of photos and just sat there, soaking it all up. As I went to leave an SUV was coming down the narrow, one-lane road. I waited for them to get to the turn around area at the end and I realized it was a Klickitat County Sheriff. I’d never encountered police in Trout Lake before. As I started pulling away I heard him calling out, “Ma’am! Ma’am!” I turned off my car and stuck my head out the window. He said, “You don’t have to leave just because I’m here. I wasn’t trying to scare you off.” I smiled and told him I was already leaving. He said, “Isn’t that a killer view!?” Absolutely! When I went back to Wampler’s house he told me that he’s heard stories of this particular sheriff (young, blonde) being a real jerk to people but he was nice to me. heehee!

Kelly and Amberly were at the house and other visitors and Trout Lakers were rolling in. We helped Wampler put the finishing touches on dinner. 12 people came over for dinner! First course was French onion soup (with the bread on top and melted cheese mmmmm) followed by pasta & chicken with a yummy sauce and a big salad. It was a fantastic dinner. I helped with dishes afterwards then we went in the backyard where we sat around the fire and listened to Dave, Wampler and Jimmy play music. It was a beautiful night out but we all tried to go to bed early knowing that Saturday night was a big night.

Saturday morning I made a big egg bake for the mob staying at Wampler’s house. We then headed over to Abe & Jenny’s property. Jimmy and Andrea are living there also and Jimmy and Danny had recently constructed a 18 hole frisbee golf course on their wide open field near their house. I didn’t play but instead lent my bag & discs to Kelly and I just walked along and took photos. It was truly mob golf with 12 people walking on the course but it was really fun. Halfway through we took a break and retreated into a big pole barn just before a downpour hit. Amberly, Kelly, Emily and I decided to head back to Wampler’s house to get ready for the pig roast later that evening. Kelly prepared her side dish while I read my book on the sofa. Eventually we all headed over to Damon and Amanda’s cabin in the woods. The pig was cooked by then and all sorts of side dishes were brought by all the guests. They also had an Easter egg hunt but this was not for little kids. A few of the eggs had candy but most of them had shots of liquor-peppermint schnapps, whiskey, kahlua and something else that I forget. I had just one egg (shot of schnapps) before I decided that was a bad idea and I should avoid the liquor. I had a glass of Dana’s wonderful sangria before switching over to beer. The pork was delicious and moist and all the other food was really good. I spent the whole night around the HUGE campfire with tons of friends. Dave, Jimmy, Wampler, Abe and Lincoln all played music and later Rachel even busted out her banjo. The weather co-operated and it was mild and didn’t rain at all. I laughed and sang and danced and talked with tons of old friends and met lots of new friends and generally just had a fantastic time. This has become an annual party for Damon and Amanda as a way to celebrate their birthdays, his was on Friday and hers was on Sunday. I will never miss this party as it is always a blast!

Sunday morning we woke up to find it surprisingly warm and sunny out. We camped out in Wampler’s backyard, continually moving our chairs as the sun and shade shifted through the trees. Dave made a huge batch of his famous biscuits and gravy which was devoured by all. A group of people decided to go out for another round of frisbee golf but I stayed at Wampler’s house, content with my spot in the sunny backyard. I read my book and made a quick trip to get some mountain photos when it looked like the sky was clouding up. By mid afternoon the clouds had taken over and I decided to head back home to Portland where I unpacked, read my book and watched Netflix.
So that was my weekend! Please let me know how you are and what you’ve been up to!
