Lincoln on mandolin & Juliet on guitar. I went to my first ever "house concert" tonight. $20 for an hour and half concert and a delicious dinner with 30 other guests in someone's wonderful home.

I realize it's a bit dark but I didn't want to be the obnoxious girl with the flash. High speed setting, braced on my leg, front row seat.

while taking this photo a construction worker in a truck stopped to ask me what I was doing.

me: taking a picture
him: what for?
me: I like to take pictures
him: are you a tourist?
me: no I live here.
him: ok...

he was forced to drive away as the light had changed but he had a look of consternation upon his face. seriously?!?! the paranoia in this country is approaching hysteria.

I'd spied these amazing doors last week but my camera was dead so I made a point of stopping by on my way to the museum Sunday morning. Right as I was taking these photos the church bells started ringing and the services let out. Out of all 50 states in the US, Oregon has the lowest church membership at 12% (some states are as high as 80%). We're a bunch of heathens.

I took maybe 15 pictures and I'm not really happy with most of them. The light was really flat blah blah blah. I will definitely be going back to take more photos.

I love the mandolin

Hello everyone!

I had a very nice weekend though I wish I had today off as it looks as if we'll have a sunny day. We're going on a freakish number of days of rain and I'm feeling starved for the sun. STARVED!

Friday night I read my book for a long time. It's written by Gretel Ehrlich and is called "This Cold Heaven: Seven Seasons in Greenland". I recently read another of her books after Betsy had recommended her to me years ago. I'm a sucker for a good book recommendation (hint...). I watched Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy which is a hilarious movie. Later I met up with Dave & Wampler at Thatcher's just a few blocks from my house. Wampler had come down from Trout Lake to play some shows with Dave. We talked and laughed and drank some beers. Elaine showed up a bit later after finally getting done with her work for the night. Her job is kicking her ass as of late so it was great to see her out. Later that night I went to Mulligan's on Hawthorne to meet up with Mark and some of his friends. I met his friend Jen who was in town from New York for her first visit ever to Portland. We stayed until they turned on the lights and kicked us out. I had a great time hanging out with Mark and his friends were quite amusing. It was very nice to meet them. My friends are harassing me pretty seriously about meeting him so I'll introduce him to them in the very near future.

Saturday I went to the coffee shop near my house and finished my book. Ohhh Greenland! For me it's no longer some indescript slab of stone and ice on the top of the world. I really enjoyed that book. I stopped by Elaine's house afterwards. She had 4 computers running in her office, three of them with work processes running on them including a linux box. huh? She's part robot. I waded around on Flickr for awhile and baked some banana muffins. My oven is terrible and is more like a crematorium than a place to cook food...way too hot. I stopped at the grocery store and I bought a small pot of tiny daffodils. They smell like spring and sunshine and make me immensely happy. I then went home to nap as I was way short on sleep from the night before. I drove to Elaine's house and we drove over to E-San, a Thai restaurant in NW Portland. It was Dave, Wampler, Elaine, Camille and me so we ordered family style and got to try lots of different dishes. The food was delicious and we savored it with much pleasure. I love spicy Thai food!

After dinner we drove to the Dublin Pub which has a Portland address but give me a break it was way the hell out in Beaverton. With the exception of downtown and the area around Lewis & Clark College most of SW Portland is a total mystery to me. The fabulous grid pattern that orders the streets on the eastside is not the westside standard. It's a twisty road to being lost. I followed Elaine and she took the scenic route. If I didn't trust her implicitly I would have sworn she was taking me to the middle of nowhere to kill me or was playing some sort of ridiculous trick on me. After 30 spirals up and down hills and curves to oblivion and back we arrived at the Dublin Pub. They have an insane number of beers on tap and a fireplace. Dave was playing with Wampler on accordion, Erik on banjo and Steve on mandolin. They played for a few hours and it was really fun. A whole bunch of friends were there and we shouted requests and sang along and had a great time. The next band that played was not our scene (summer breeze...makes me feel fine! *stifles laughter*). The whole mob decided to go to another bar in Multnomah Village but I took leave and went to meet Mark and Jen at his house in NW. It was very nice to just lay on the sofa and watch a movie.

Sunday I woke up and had coffee with Mark and Jen. I showered and then went to the museum to volunteer. It was crazy busy. I worked for a while handing out the audio guides to the big exhibit they currently have up. I then took in the audio guides at the end of the exhibit then back up to handing them out. On my break I walked through an exhibit of mezzotint prints which was really interesting. I got tired of giving my little spiel about the audio guides: how to use them, where the exhibit begins...repeat ad naseum. My shift flew by and I was happy to leave as I was tired and hungry.

I went home for just a few minutes before meeting up with Elaine, Dave and Wampler. We had tickets to a 'house concert', my first ever. I've been to a zillion house shows where a loud band plays in someone's musty basement or garage but this was quite different. You bring your own wine and for $20 we got an hour and a half of music and dinner. Our friend Lincoln played mandolin and guitar and another musician, Juliet, played guitar. They traded off playing and singing songs. It was a lovely, intimate concert. We sat in the front row so I could take pictures but I was trying to be as least obnoxious as possible with my camera: no flash, taking shots at louder moments. The music was beautiful. The last song was a spiritual and everyone stood and sang along. I got goose bumps and grinned. Dinner was sublime and led to that wonderful "food high" feeling of a truly excellent meal. The salad had the best dressing of rose petal, sherry, honey vinaigrette and the black bean soup was to die for. I had a small coconut cream tart for dessert. We went home feeling nourished and satisfied in so many ways. I got my pictures off of my camera and then went home to read and call it a night.

So that was my weekend. I'm going to be very late with next week's posting because I leave Sunday morning for a financial aid conference on the coast and won't be back until Tuesday afternoon. Please let me know how you are and what you're up to!

The city of Portland recently filed a lawsuit against the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). This federal agency is requiring that the city cover these reservoirs to protect against a bacteria called Cryptosporidium.

This stems from an outbreak of this bacteria in the drinking water of Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the 1993. I was a teenager living outside of Milwaukee when it occurred. Portland states that their drinking water source, the Bull Run watershed where no humans are permitted to enter, is far safer than Milwaukee's source, Lake Michigan, which sees heavy pollution and human activity.

I'm very interested to see what the end result will be. I live near Mt Tabor and it is one of my favorite places in Portland.

mossy days

Hello everyone! I had a very nice long weekend with Monday off for Martin Luther King Day. The rain continues here with flooding and mudslides popping up across the state. I don't mind the rain but I do miss the sun. sigh

Friday night a group of us drove out to Hillsboro, a suburb on the far western side of Hillsboro, to see Dave play at an Irish pub. Molly drove me, Gina & John and Elaine rode out with Dave and Eric who was playing banjo for the night. Steve was also there to play mandolin and harmonica. The pub was called Crowley's of Cork and was in the middle of suburban sprawl. I could never live in Hillsboro. You can tell that 7 years ago it was mostly farmland and has since been paved over with strip malls. yuck! The beers were good, Smithwick's on tap, as was the food. I had an RLT, a blt made with rashers, a yummy Irish bacon. We listened to the music and played hangman (sesquipedalian, meaning polysyllabic or a long, ponderous word). Us Portlanders closed down the bar and were the last people to leave when they closed. We were in the car and leaving and at 9:48 PM (!!!). ahhhh suburbia! It seemed to take forever to get back home but the drive was amusing. Molly cracks me up.

We went back to Elaine & Gina's house to hang out. Molly, pregnant woman that she is, decided to head home for the night. Elaine, Gina, John & I played a round of Shanghai Rummy which was really fun.

Saturday morning I woke up and watched a movie, Hustle and Flow. I showered and ran some errands before heading up to Mt Tabor Park. I walked around both the lower and upper reservoirs and took lots of pictures. All this rain has led to most stationary things being covered in beautiful, plush moss. At one point I had to retreat to my car when it began hailing and pouring rain. I drove as far up as I could and then walked to the top to see the city after the passing rain. When I left Mt Tabor I went to Elaine's house to get my pictures off my camera. I went home then and talked with Camille before starting a movie. I watched The Constant Gardner which I really liked. Rachel Weisz' character was really great and it was very suspenseful. Late that night I went to the airport to pick up Mark, a man I've been seeing. He had changed his flight to come back early from New York. I drove him to his house in NW Portland.

The next day we went out to breakfast in The Pearl, a schmancy part of Portland that used to be an industrial area. I had hazelnut pancakes and coffee. The neighborhood has incredible amounts of construction going on. I drove home and talked with Camille for a while then read the Sunday paper. I read my book for a while and tried to nap but gave up since the neighbors were playing Eminem. In the evening I went to Elaine & Gina's house and we drove over to Erin and Terry's house for dinner and to watch 24. It's the only show I regularly watch as I don't like being tied to the tv. We enjoy watching it together though and call it our weekly heart attack. Erin made a great dinner of chicken enchiladas, spanish rice and a big caesar salad. We drank beers and had our collective heart attack.

Monday I slept in which was really wonderful as I haven't been sleeping well lately. I did my Pilates workout then showered and went to the coffee shop near my house. I got a yummy prosciutto croissant sandwich and a mocha and read my book. I stopped by Elaine's house for a bit but she was pretty swamped with work. I went back home and talked on the phone with Nandita in San Francisco for a while. It was really great to talk with her for so long. I then read my book for a long time before going over to Elaine and Gina's for dinner. We've moved our standing Tuesday night dinners to Monday night because of 24. We had fabulous burgers from the grill with all the toppings. After we ate we played cards. We actually had 2 games of Phase 10 going because there were so many people, 8 that is. Just before 8 o'clock we all piled into the living room and watched 24 again. Oh the suspense! We have a silence rule and people are shushed for daring to speak while a character is speaking! It's pretty funny actually. We all laugh at the hilarious faces made by Chloe, one of the characters on the show.

So that was my weekend. I'll be posting lots of pictures from Mt Tabor. I don't have my pictures from Dave's show on Friday with me so I will post those later in the week. Please let me know how you are and what you've been up to. I hope all is well!

Hello everyone!

I had a very nice weekend. Friday night I went over to Elaine & Dave's house. Wampler was down visiting from Trout Lake since he had played a show with Dave the night before. Dave & Wampler and I decided to go out for some dinner. We ended up at Hung Far Low, a Chinese restaurant just up the street. This place is a Portland institution and a zillion jokes have been made over it's funny name. It made the news when the restaurant decided to leave it's long held location in Chinatown in downtown Portland and move to 82nd Avenue. The rent there is cheaper of course and the area is rapidly filling with more Asian shops and restaurants than Chinatown itself. The food was cheap and arrived quickly on giant platters. Chinese food is not my favorite. I much prefer Thai, Vietnamese or Japanese but the food was good and we were all stuffed with plenty of leftovers to take home. We went back home where Dave read, Wampler did sudoku puzzles (a recent addiction for him) and I worked on "the world's most difficult jigsaw puzzle". It was a picture of Disney villains but there were pictures on both sides of the pieces with one side a flipped version of the same image. I got totally into it and ended up finishing the puzzle that night.

Later Elaine came home and the four of us watched a few episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm which I love!

Saturday I woke and quickly got ready and ran to the store to get stuff for a lunch. Jess picked me up around 10 and we drove up to Mt Hood to go snowshoeing. We first stopped at the trailhead for Mirror Lake but there wasn't enough snow. We drove just a few miles further to Trillium Lake and the snow was plentiful! When we first started off it was raining on but after a bit thankfully it turned to snow. It was so beautiful! We did the 4.5 mile loop around the lake. We came across an old gravesite from someone that died along the Oregon Trail. The tombstone was so weathered I could only read "died 1882". We stopped to catch snowflakes on our tongue and listen to the soft sound of the snow and take lots of pictures. It was really beautiful and lots of fun and I can't wait to go snowshoeing again!

Later that day I went to Elaine & Dave's to get my pictures off my camera. Dave had been planning a boy's night out but they were short one guy (they were using buy one get one free coupons for dinner :) ) so I was invited along. Terry came over and the three of us drove to my old neighborhood to meet Andy at Putters. We had a few drinks there before crossing the street to eat at Country Bill's Restaurant. I hadn't been there in a couple years but I was very familiar with it. Every time Ryan's dad came into town, which was fairly often, we went to eat at Country Bills. We sat in the lounge and we were the only people under the age of 40 and the place was packed. Even Ryan's dad referred to it as the geriatric club! The steaks were great though! We all got salads & baked potatoes too. I love when the waiter comes around with the caddy of condiments and gives you heaping dollops of butter and sour cream and crazy amounts of bacon bits and chives. I don't like bacon bits. ewwww

We rolled ourselves outta there after dinner and Terry & Dave & I went back to Dave's house. I dropped them off at Thatchers on my way home. I watched a documentary about the artist Ray Johnson called How to Draw a Bunny which was really fascinating!

Sunday I woke up and after showering I went to my local coffee shop and read the paper. From there I drove out to the Gorge to take some pictures. The waterfalls were really gushing with all our rainfall and they were back to their mossy, green splendor with the ice of a few weeks ago completely gone. At one point I had pulled over to take pictures of the stone railing along the road with it's great curves and green color from all the moss. There wasn't a shoulder on that side of the road and it was by a curve so after taking the photo I quickly crossed the road. While crossing I stumbled and my ankle rolled and I began falling. Oh how I wish someone was there to witness this graceful moment! It seemed like it took forever for me to actually fall. My only concern really was protecting my camera which I was holding. Like a mother falling while holding her baby I let my body take the fall and just held my camera up. I landed hard on my left knee but quickly got up and limped back to my car. I had scraped the palm of my hand and torn my jeans and my knee was bleeding and really scraped up. I decided then that I was done taking pictures for the day and went home to clean my wound and get my pictures off my camera. I know have the knee of a 9 year old girl...scabby and sore! I spent the rest of the afternoon and evening watching movies and reading my book. I finished that great book about Krakatoa and I'm now reading an Annie Proulx collection of short stories about Wyoming called Bad Dirt. Today is the first day of the winter term at the college so it's a little nuts. I also had my first PE class today. I've finally accepted that I need to wake up early to get in a regular workout and classes at the college only cost me $2! woohoo!

So that was my weekend! Please let me know what you did and how you are!

my holiday break...in a nutshell

Hello everyone!

I had a very nice Christmas (my first ever in Portland!) and New Years with friends. The college was closed from December 23 until January 3rd so I had a nice long break from work. I spent Christmas with Elaine and Gina. I had homemade cinnamon buns (made by lainee) Christmas morning. Gina and I drank coffee and did a jigsaw puzzle and watched movies. I talked on the phone to my parents and both my brother & sister. Later in the afternoon we all went over to their aunt and uncle's house in Vancouver for a big dinner and gift exchange. For me this is the year of the scarf. My mom knit me 4 scarves (a requested item) and Elaine and Gina gave me a soft and dreamy cashmere scarf. I got some great books, a necklace, a new hula doll (for my new car) and some beautiful framed pictures from Jess' recent trip to Italy.

2006 was also the year of the champagne headache. Elaine and I went to our friends' Adam & Bridget's house. We hung out in the garage like teenagers and occasionally fired up the gigantic space heater. It's really more like a jet engine than a space heater. It was a pretty mellow affair with just a handful of friends eating snack and drinking beers. At midnight (or something close to it) we toasted with champagne. I didn't even drink very much of it but the next day I was ruined. A terrible headache and I threw up several times. I can't even remember the last time I threw up. Most of you know I *hate* hangovers and am always drinking water whenever I drink. Champagne and I are not friends though and I'll never drink it again.

During my time off of work I was hoping to go snowshoeing up at Trout Lake but the warm temperatures turned their feet of snow into soup. I was also hoping to go to the coast for one day but it was extremely stormy with high wind warnings on the coast and day after day of rain. I still had a wonderful time off. I could get used to that as I have no shortage of ways to entertain myself.

I played frisbee golf, baked cookies, weeded my garden and planted primroses (I love the Portland gardening schedule). I went to Sassy Jacks and saw Dave and Jimmy Robb play some music. Afterwards (at 2 AM) I gave Jimmy Robb a haircut and trimmed up his beard. haha! I had an incredible dinner at Elaine & Gina's parents' house with mulled wine and prime rib. It was sublime! I read a lot (The Future of Ice by Gretel Ehrlich, A Million Little Pieces by James Frey and Krakatoa by Simon Winchester...just 40 pages til I'm finished). I watched a lot of movies (Grizzly Man, Open Your Eyes, What the $#%@! do we know, House of Flying Daggers, Breaking the Waves and the Comedians of Comedy). I also did a lot of work on my photo cards. I have FINALLY put together a portfolio of cards and I sent up a batch of 70 cards to be sold at the Trout Lake Country. I made over 200 cards over the week.

So that's what I've been up to. I don't have many photos to post but I do have some and will upload them soon! Please let me know how your holidays were! I'm looking forward to the good times that await in 2006!
