50 holes of golf at the Frizbee Masters!
Hello everyone!
I had a really great weekend at the Frizbee Masters at Silver Falls State Park. I left around 10:30 Friday morning with Terry and we drove through rain and green fields and forests until we reached the park at noon exactly. We found Elaine and Dave who had arrived just a bit before us. Our friend Dave Wampler (Trout Laker with an accordion) is on the Masters committee so somehow he snagged the infirmary building for us. The Masters is held at the Youth Group Camp area of the park so there are several buildings. We were very lucky to have the infirmary which had plenty of sleeping space for us along with a kitchen, bathroom and a great woodburning stove. Before unpacking though we wanted to play some golf! The four of us started up at the church, a beautiful area high on a hill where church services are held sometimes. I was golfing really well even though it started pouring rain. I was happy to be at the Masters again.
We decided to go to the Trickle Falls camp to escape the rain and to eat some food. We grilled up some sausages and talked with friends that were showing up for the weekend’s festivities. Gina arrived also and we headed out for some more practice rounds. It’s such a fun course to play it’s a shame that we only get to play it for this weekend as it’s set up explicitly for this tournament. We golfed about 14 or 15 holes then decided to unload the cars and get set up in the Infirmary. We claimed rooms and blew up our air mattresses and pulled out all the food bins. Later in the evening hordes of people started showing up and many people we knew, some we didn’t began setting up tents around our cabin. We headed down to the clubhouse for dinner which we’ve learned is not so impressive. It was a beautiful evening with mist clinging to the fir trees. Later that night a “one-man band” was playing down at the ballroom. The sound was cranked up way to loud so Gina and I grabbed some camping chairs and took them into the field. We listened to the music at a more reasonable volume along with the creek and the frogs and the crickets. When we started getting chilly we walked back to our cabin and warmed up in front of the fire. It was so nice to have a warm, dry place to retreat to. The fire was also great for drying out our wet shoes and pants.
Later that night I walked with Elaine down to the Trickle Falls camp. It was time for some late night music. Jimmy, who runs the Inn in Trout Lake, got his guitar and started playing some songs. Dave pulled out his guitar and so did a few others. Wampler got his accordion and the music went on and on. It was a great night and I slept like a champ.
Saturday morning I awoke to voices in the kitchen as Elaine had to leave early to drive back to Portland for dodgeball finals. Bummer! I woke up and snagged some coffee and took a quick shower. Gina made bagel sandwiches for us to take in our golf bags. We gathered up our group and golfed a few practice holes before starting at hole one. There’s about 250 people at the Masters so the course gets pretty crowded. Ridiculous clothing (or golf gear) are required on the course so it’s definitely some good people watching. We teed off with a group of 9 around 10:30 or 11. I didn’t really know what time it was most of the weekend which is always nice. I had some great throws and some terrible ones. It was tons of fun though. Dave’s outfit was the most ridiculous and topped what he wore last year. His sparkly cape needs some mending though for sure. Discs were thrown into crazy thickets and dense forests and deep streams and mud pits and into trees (thwack!) but somehow they were all found. Periodically throughout the course there are kegs so we would fill our nalgene bottles with beer and continue on. It was a beautiful day with blue skies and sun. Great golfing weather! We finally finished our 18 holes around 5 pm which is totally ridiculous. We were all exhausted from standing and walking around so long.
Back at the cabin there was snacks and naps for all. I woke up and found Elaine and Terry ready to get dinner down at the clubhouse. We arrived to find very little food left. I ate a few bites of ravioli, decided I hated it and went back to our cabin for food. We’ve learned to bring our own dinners for next year. It began raining pretty seriously that evening so we were happy to be in our warm cabin with the fire cranked. People began getting their costumes ready for the party that night. This year’s theme was “The Frizbee Masters salutes the Theory of Evolution”. We were slackers and never really got costumes together. I was going to draw on a third eye but it was pouring rain and I was wearing a hat anyway. I walked down to the ballroom with Elaine and Terry and Kyle. There was a great blues band, Paul Delay, playing and the crowd was loving it. I saw some great costumes and danced and talked with a bunch of friends. I stayed until I was much too tired and went back to the cabin. Terry and I stayed up for a bit longer until sleepiness overtook us both.
Sunday I woke up and we decided to rally for an early start to try and beat some of the mob scene out on the course. I made sandwiches and we quickly got ready and headed for hole one. We were one of the first groups on the course so we were able to get through a lot faster than on Saturday. It was tons of fun and is such a beautiful course. It rained periodically followed by sunbreaks and then more rain. I lost a few strokes from my previous day’s score but still didn’t bother posting to the scoreboard as I knew I wasn’t a contender. I frisbee golf for fun not because I expect to win any contests. After our round we walked back to the cabin and began packing up our stuff and cleaning. We walked back as the men’s and women’s leader groups were finishing up their rounds. Gina and I decided to bail before the ceremonies as we just wanted to get home by this point. I’d played about 50 holes of frisbee golf and was craving a warm meal. Back in Portland Gina whipped up a great dinner of pasta with alfredo and sliced sausage with tons of broccoli. Everyone else rolled in later that night and told us who took the Master’s coat.
So that was my weekend! I’m off to Trout Lake on Mt Adams next weekend and then after that…omigod I think I’m going to stay home for a weekend! Well maybe I’ll drive to the coast for the day. Haha! Please let me know how you are and what you’ve been up to. I’ll post all my photos today but hope to post some videos in the next few days also.
Please let me know how you are and what you’ve been doing.
Xoxoxo,
carolyn
